(Political) leaders ought to assess the facts of the matter, apply good thinking to the circumstances, integrate it with moral convictions that are defensible, and come to conclusions about where the people ought to be whether or not they want to go there. And then it is his job to convince the people and persuade them to follow him to do the right thing, rather than following them to do what they want.
